Moody (1955), who related how he ‘found himself reacting to a child in a therapeutic manner, described a procedure dependent upon the same process, while Stein (1955) in his paper on ‘Loathsome women’ elaborated the subject of the animus-anima conjunction and how it affected him. It is perhaps not altogether surprising that it should be an analytical psychologist, Kraemer (1958), who published a case illustrating how a psychotherapist could suffer from illusions about a patient by misusing her dreams to justify a countertransference.

But this is only part of the analytic process, since the analyst soon becomes involved himself. Because it was originally hoped that the analyst’s personality would be eliminated from the analytic process, the counter-transference was the first class of reaction by analysts to be studied. It was soon found that the patient’s transference stimulates the analyst’s repressed unconscious, which becomes projected on to the patient so as to interfere with the way he conducts the analysis. Efforts were therefore made to eliminate this.

But as the patient’s ego becomes more established, towards the end of the analysis, it is relevant for the analyst to introduce more and more of himself—not only his ego. Then it is possible and satisfying to both parties to conduct conversations, and to interact in a more and more complete and spontaneous fashion. Though I have never heard it stated, I have certainly thought that the introduction of the analyst’s ego, as I maintain often at the wrong time, has the aim of reducing the transference, but it really avoids its transpersonal aspect by pretending that to introduce ‘personal and human feeling helps’.
