Although independently suspended wheels were used on an early Bolleé steam vehicle, independent suspension did not come into widespread use until the late 1930s, and then mostly for just the front wheels.
Front wheel braking is far more effective than rear wheel, since the inertia of deceleration increases the vertical reaction on the front wheels, thus improving the grip on the road. When vehicles with four-wheel brakes were first introduced, they were vulnerable to being hit in the rear by the less effective two-wheel braked competition. It was customary therefore to carry a warning triangle on the rear. Mechanically operated brakes using rods or cables needed frequent adjustment by skilled mechanics.
Steering is thus effected by the horse being encouraged to turn in the required direction by a pull on the reins. On very early motor vehicles, the same pivoting axle was initially used, often with some form of tiller for manual steering. This was found to produce a dangerously unstable arrangement, however, because the horse in its shafts had provided a stabilizing moment. Numerous technical solutions were tried, but the Ackerman linkage used on modern vehicles was quickly adopted.
