Today, CBT is an umbrella term that includes many different empirically supported therapies that share the basic CBT principles. However, CBT is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. There are clear differences in the specific strategies for targeting specific problems. But despite the differences in the CBT conceptualizations of and approach to treating these different psychological problems, the strategies are firmly rooted within the basic CBT approach—namely, that maladaptive cognitions are causally linked to emotions, behaviors, and physiology, and that correcting maladaptive cognitions results in the elimination of psychological problems and greater general well-being.
