The Greeks, nevertheless, owned and operated small businesses, shops, and a workshop in the suburb outside the fortress,providing basic services and necessities for the Turkish settlers. The long Ottoman-Venetian strugglesfor Crete and the Ottoman-Holy League wars, which lasted for almost three decades, resulted in economic devastation in the frontier areas and a major economic and political crisis for the Ottoman state. 41 The forts of Anavarinwere in a bad state of repair,and there was widespread depopulation in the Morea by 1700.
